Rhythm and blues (or R&B) was coined as a musical marketing term in the United States in 1949 by Jerry Wexler at Billboard magazine, and was used to designate upbeat popular music performed by African American artists that combined jazz, gospel, and blues. It replaced the term race music, which was deemed offensive, as well as the Billboard category name "Harlem Hit Parade," in June of 1949, and was initially used to identify the rocking style of music that combined the 12 bar blues format and boogie woogie with a backbeat, later known as rock and roll. In 1948, RCA Victor was marketing black music under the name "Blues and Rhythm," but the words were reversed by Wexler of Atlantic Records, the most aggressive and most dominant label in the R&B field in the early years. Today, the acronym "R&B" is almost always used instead of "rhythm and blues", and defines the modern version of the soul and funk influenced African-American pop music that originated with the demise of disco in 1980.

Rhythm and Blues

Original rhythm and blues
In its first manifestation, rhythm and blues was a predecessor to rock and roll. It was strongly influenced by jazz and jump music as well as black gospel music, and influenced jazz in return (hard bop was the product of the influence of rhythm and blues, blues, and gospel music on bebop) and African tribal beats.

The first rock and roll consisted of rhythm and blues songs like "Rocket 88" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" making an appearance on the popular music charts as well as the R&B charts. "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On", the first hit by Jerry Lee Lewis was an R&B cover song that made #1 on pop, R&B and country and western charts.

Musicians paid little attention to the distinction between jazz and rhythm and blues, and frequently recorded in both genres. Numerous swing bands (for example, Jay McShann's, Tiny Bradshaw's, and Johnny Otis's) also recorded rhythm and blues. Count Basie had a weekly live rhythm and blues broadcast from Harlem. Even a bebop icon like arranger Tadd Dameron also arranged for Bull Moose Jackson and spent two years as Jackson's pianist after establishing himself in bebop. Most of the studio musicians in R&B were jazz musicians. And it worked in the other direction as well. Many of the musicians on Charlie Mingus's breakthrough jazz recordings were R&B veterans. Lionel Hampton's big band of the early 1940s, which produced the classic recording "Flying Home" (tenor sax solo by Illinois Jacquet) was the breeding ground for many of the bebop legends of the 1950s. Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson was a one-man fusion, a bebop saxophonist and a blues shouter.

The 1950s was the premier decade for classic rhythm and blues. Overlapping with other genres such as jazz and rock and roll, R&B also developed regional variations. A strong, distinct style straddling the border with blues came out of New Orleans and was based on a rolling piano style first made famous by Professor Longhair. In the late 1950s, Fats Domino hit the national charts with "Blueberry Hill" and "Ain't That a Shame". Other artists who popularized this Louisiana flavor of R&B included Clarence "Frogman" Henry, Frankie Ford, Irma Thomas, The Neville Brothers, and Dr. John.

At the start of their career, The Rolling Stones were essentially an R&B band.

Contemporary R&B

It was not until the 1980s that the term "R&B" regained ordinary usage. During that time, the soul music of James Brown and Sly & the Family Stone had adapted elements from psychedelic music and other styles through the work of performers like George Clinton. Funk also became a major part of disco, a kind of dance pop electronic music. By the early 1980s, however, funk and soul had become sultry and sexually-charged with the work of Prince and others. At that time, the modern style of contemporary R&B came to be a major part of American popular music.

R&B today defines a style of African-American music, originating after the demise of disco in 1980, that combines elements of soul music, funk music, pop music, and (after 1986) hip hop in the form known as contemporary R&B. In this context only the abbreviation "R&B" is used, not the full expression.

Sometimes referred to as "urban contemporary" (the name of the radio format that plays hip hop and R&B music) or "urban pop", contemporary R&B is distinguished by a slick, electronic record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, and a smooth, lush style of vocal arrangement. Uses of hip hop inspired beats are typical, although the roughness and grit inherent in hip hop are usually reduced and smoothed out.

History

Contemporary R&B singer Mary J. Jackson's Thriller, which repopularized black music with pop audiences after a post-disco backlash among United States mainstream audiences, is the best-selling album of all time worldwide.

Female R&B singers like Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson gained great popularity during the last half of the decade; and Tina Turner, then in her 50s, came back with a series of hits with crossover appeal. Also popular was New Edition, a group of teenagers who served as the prototype for later boy bands such as the New Kids on the Block, The Backstreet Boys, and others.

In 1986, Teddy Riley began producing R&B recordings that included influences from the increasingly popular genre of hip hop music. This combination of R&B style and hip-hop rhythms was termed new jack swing, and artists such as Keith Sweat, Guy, Jodeci, and BellBivDeVoe (featuring former members of New Edition). Another popular, but short-lived group, with more pronounced R&B roots was Levert, whose lead singer, Gerald Levert, was the son of O'Jays lead vocalist Eddie Levert.

In the early 1990s, R&B group Boyz II Men repopularized classic-soul inspired vocal harmony, and several similar groups (among them Shai, Soul for Real, and Dru Hill) would follow in their footsteps. Boyz II Men, and several of their competitors, benefited from lush ballads from producers such as Babyface and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who brought Michael Jackson's sister Janet Jackson to fame during the late 1980s and early 1990s. As a solo artist, Babyface and contemporaries such as Brian McKnight eschewed prominent hip hop influences, and recorded in a smooth, soft style of R&B termed quiet storm.

In the early 1990s, alternative rock, adult contemporary, and gangsta rap ruled the charts, and R&B artists began adding even more of a rap/hip hop sound to their work. New jack swing had its synthesizer-heavy rhythm tracks replaced by grittier East Coast hip hop inspired backing tracks, resulting in a genre labeled "hip hop soul" by Sean "Puffy" Combs, producer for Mary J. Blige. Blige and other hip hop soul artists such as R. Kelly, Montell Jordan, Brandy, and Aaliyah, more than their slicker new jack swing predecessors, brought hip hop slang, style, and attitudes to R&B music. The subgenre also includes a heavy gospel influence with vocal inflections and sounds. The style became less popular by the end of the 1990s, but later experienced a resurgence. The hip hop soul sound continues to be heard in the work of artists such as Jaheim, Ashanti, Amerie, and Keyshia Cole.

During the mid-1990s, highly successful artists such as Mariah Carey, girl group TLC and the aforementioned Boyz II Men brought contemporary R&B to the mainstream. Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey recorded several Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits, including "One Sweet Day", a collaboration between both acts which became the longest-running number-one hit in Hot 100 history. In addition, both Boyz II Men and TLC released albums in 1994, II and CrazySexyCool, respectively, that sold over ten million copies, earning them diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. Other top-selling R&B artists from this era included singer Toni Braxton, singer/songwriter/producer R. Kelly, and girl group En Vogue.

During the later part of the decade, neo soul, which added a 1970s soul music influence to the hip hop soul blend, arose, led by artists such as D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and Maxwell. Several artists, most notably Missy Elliott, further blurred the line between R&B and hip hop by recording in both genres simultaneously.

During the late-1990s and early 2000s, the influence of pop on R&B could be heard in the work of several pop musicians, most notably Jennifer Lopez and the later recordings of *NSYNC and the early recordings of 98 Degrees. *NSYNC's lead singer Justin Timberlake went on to make several solo recordings that showed heavy influences from both R&B and hip hop music. Other pop stars who perform heavily R&B influenced pop music (sometimes referred to as "dirty pop","urban pop", or a modern definition of "hip pop") include Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, and Pink.

In the United Kingdom, R&B found its way into the UK garage subgenre of 2Step, typified by R&B-style singing accompanied by breakbeat/jungle rhythms. Among the most notable 2Step artists is Craig David, who crossed over to American R&B audiences in the early 2000s.

Present day
By the 2000s, the cross-pollination between R&B and hip hop had increased to the point where, in most cases, the only prominent difference between a record being a hip hop record or an R&B record is whether its vocals are rapped or sung. Mainstream modern R&B has a sound more based on rhythm than hip hop soul had, and lacks the hardcore and soulful urban "grinding" feel on which hip-hop soul relied. That rhythmic element descends from new jack swing. R&B began to focus more on solo artists rather than groups as the 2000s progressed. As of 2005, the most prominent R&B artists include Usher, Beyoncé (formerly of Destiny's Child), and Mariah Carey whose music often blurs the line between contemporary R&B and pop.

Soulful R&B continues to be popular, with artists such as Alicia Keys,John Legend, Toni Braxton and American Idol winner Fantasia showcasing classic influences in their work. Some R&B singers have used elements of Caribbean music in their work, especially dancehall and reggaeton.

Quiet storm, while still existent, is no longer a dominant presence on the pop charts, and is generally confined to urban adult contemporary radio. Most of the prominent quiet storm artists, including Babyface and Gerald Levert, began their careers in the 1980s and 1990s, although newer artists such as Kem also record in the quiet storm style. Its influence can still be seen in singles such as Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together".

In addition, several producers have developed specialized styles of song production. Timbaland, for example, became notable for his hip hop and jungle based syncopated productions in the late-1990s, during which time he produced R&B hits for Aaliyah, Ginuwine, and singer/rapper Missy Elliott. By the end of the decade, Timbaland's influences had shifted R&B songs towards a sound that approximated his own, with slightly less of a hip hop feel. Lil' Jon became famous for a style he termed "crunk & B", deriving its influences from the Southern hip hop subclassification of crunk music. Jon gave his main R&B artist, Ciara, the title of "The First Lady of Crunk & B", and Brooke Valentine and Usher have also recorded R&B songs with strong crunk influences.

These are the major subgenres of contemporary R&B, roughly in chronological order of popularity.

Quiet storm

Quiet storm is a broad category of R&B and jazz-based music that is mellow, laid-back and often romantic. Its name comes from an innovative radio show that originated at WHUR at Howard University in the mid-1970s, named after Smokey Robinson's hit 1975 single "Quiet Storm". Unlike contemporary R&B, quiet storm shows little influence from hip hop, and generally plays to the urban adult contemporary crowd. The genre achieved great mainstream success during the 1980s with artists like Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, and Sade. Among other notable quiet storm musicians are Lionel Richie, Gerald Levert, Joe, and Brian McKnight.

New jack swing
A fusion of hip hop music and R&B, new jack swing was distinguished by significant use of rapped choruses or bridges and prominent use of drum machines such as the Roland TR-808. Teddy Riley and his group Guy are credited with being the inventor of the genre; other notable figures include Bobby Brown, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Jodeci, and Boyz II Men. A female alternative, new jill swing, was championed by acts such as Janet Jackson, Total, Shanice, TLC, and SWV.

Hip hop soul
Essentially new jack swing for the 1990s, hip hop soul took the style further towards a pure hip hop sound, usually accompanied by a nervy, gangsta rap-esque image. The sound was remenescent of funk with the inclusion of relatively darker baselines with elongated groove notes. Among its most notable figures were Montell Jordan, BLACKstreet, Groove Theory, and the "Queen of Hip Hop Soul", Mary J. Blige.

Neo soul
Neo soul blends a hip hop influenced R&B sound with the classic soul of the 1970s. One of the places this "big bang" of art renewal took place with particular energy was 15th century Italy which saw the birth of both opera and ballet.

Selling the Classical Arts and Ballet

It is in the reality of Renaissance thinking that the stark difference between the classical arts and what is known today as "pop art" or pop culture exists. Today, hip hop, rap, street funk, even basic rock-n-roll, is all about finding the next craze or fad or "slick" (or even "sick") sound so as to earn street credit or, more precisely, earn millions of dollars in record or track sales. 500 years ago it was the ultimate high tech experience, much more akin to how we think about Star Trek or some epic action adventure, to be able to have the outright luxury of spare time or leisure time (what we think of today as our week-end) not taken up all day long with harvesting crops, making bread, tending the farm and fighting invading armies so as to stave off starvation; to have spare time and be able to use it in the pursuit of a description or depiction of the beautiful, the symmetry, the poetry in motion, of the human form. In a world still filled with daily challenges just to make the food you need, keep your clothes on your back, avoid catching a fatal sickness, and dealing with any encroaching army trying to steal what little you have managed to store up, an exploration of beauty in either music, sculpture, painting or ballet was an exquisite respite from a very grim reality. Ballet did not exist in the Dark Ages, but make no mistake the later Middle Ages and the early Rennaisance were still, by today's standards, extremely difficult, challenging, and deadly times. Only about 50 years prior to the first recorded use of the term "ballo" circa 1390 Italy, the Black Death or Plague had killed 50% of Europe's population.

So the classical arts and ballet are built on a type of hard, simple honesty: the need for the human spirit to explore and understand the concept of the beautiful. The human body itself is beautiful, and the body in motion when used in precise ways can create moving images and a type of living sculpture that aids the human spirit's quest to understand the beautiful symmetry or "golden ratio" that it is itself built on. This is the origin of the massive disconnect between most every modern art form created centuries after the forbidding, grim and mortal challenges left over from the Middle Ages had been eliminated by the rise of the industrial and modern eras and the classical arts which were forged together when the very spare time itself needed to make a creative process possible was extremely precious.

Today, there is a dichotomy between ballet and the classical arts and nearly all modern art forms. The modern art forms do a much better job at being loud, flashy, and yes even more accessible than the classical arts and ballet do. The modern art forms are much, much easier to make a lot of money with due to contemporary society being a balance between the regular drum beat of the work day and the modern state of getting regular pay for regular work - an idea completely alien to the Renaissance - and the need to have essentially a sound track for this regular, even reality that sparks on commonly shared experiences from love to bad work places to random silly business. Even during this recession the modern world is far, far more stable and less fatal than any time during the Renaissance. But these modern art forms and the reality of modern living are notorious for lacking the one thing money has never, ever been able to buy: meaning. Or, more specifically, understanding of the human condition. These are the things for which the classical arts and ballet were specifically created to explore. It is no accident that some of the most famous modern art works either reflect or at least echo the composition and balances of classical arts such as Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, a large part of which sounds nothing like modern rock at all but more like a medieval minstrel tune.

With regard to education and cultural benefit, the classical arts and ballet are still irreplaceable. Consider that throughout Central and South America the Latin and Hispanic peoples have become world famous for generating world-class ballet dancers who can perform amazing feats on stage; China, Japan and of course Russia are also renown for having excellent classical arts from symphonies to ballet companies; there is even a ballet company in war-torn Iraq making ballet a truly world-wide dance form. Ballet is particularly well suited to be a global art form because of it's pursuit of the universal human quest - understanding beauty, balance, and form. It is perhaps no accident that in countries where economic conditions are hard and life tends to be challenging, ballet does especially well: Columbia (which is also war-torn), Venezuela, Cuba all regularly produce excellent ballet dancers as well as other classical artists. Dance Theater of Harlem and Alvin Ailey among numerous other American companies demonstrate that African American and Native American artists participate in a very profound way through classical ballet.

There is certainly a place in life for both modern arts and classical arts. As you drive into work listening to the haunting symphony of Giselle through the drone of traffic noise is probably not all that practical. A constant diet of Eminem, Lady Gaga and Vitamin C is also very likely to leave the spirit in need of something more profound with which to gauge the process of life. The one area where there is a very distinct choice to make, however, is in your child's education.

The major thing you need to learn are, major and minor scales. After you learn that, try and do different combinations and patterns with the drum beat you have made. When mixing a beat, start with each track individually. Solo each track and make sure it sounds good by itself. EQ it if you have to, but if each track sounds good by itself, the whole beat will sound that much better. DO NOT DISTORT! If your master levels are in the red before you bounce to disc or .mp3, your distorting. Don't worry about if its not loud enough. You never ever ever want to distort. If you are distorting, check any instrument that has boom or low end, Like a kick, bass, sub, etc. these tend to distort more often.

10. The Bounce- Now that you made you're beat, Its the hottest hip hop beat ever, you want to put it on cd or upload it to the internet. When you're exporting a beat for cd, Use .wav file. 44.1 16bit. If you want to upload to the internet use, 320kbps (the highest .mp3 quality) or 128kbps. Most websites wont accept 320kbps because the file size is too big. So go with 128kbps.

How to Make Professional Rap Beats in FL Studio in 4 Steps

There are many factors that need to be taken into account if you wish to be successful at creating professional, industry standard beats in FL Studio. In this article I will touch on the key factors that you will need to master and this is what separates the pros from the amateurs when producing hot rap beats.

How to Make Professional Rap Beats in FL Studio in 4 Steps

Where to Start

Some people have a preference in what instrument they first want to layout when producing beats in FL Studio. Some prefer the melody, some prefer the bass line and some prefer the drums. No answer to this is wrong or right, and it is mostly a matter of opinion, but for starters I will recommend laying out a good drum pattern first.

Before we get started, set your BPM (beats per minute) to something between 85 and 95.

Creating the Drum Pattern

First, search through your sounds for a nice, hard-hitting kick sample. In the example that we're going to create, you'll want to try to find a kick sound that hits hard but does not contain a lot of low-end sub bass (this will make it easier to mix with the bass later). Once you have found a good drum kick sound, fill in the steps on the step sequencer of where you would like the kick to be heard. Now, right-click on the sound in the step sequencer and select "Send to piano roll." This will put your drum kick pattern in the piano roll where you will want to adjust your velocity. Velocity is what gives the sound a human feel and not so robotic. Technically, velocity is to adjust how hard something is hit, or how hard a string is plucked, a piano key is pressed, etc. Play with this a little bit until your drum kick pattern starts to sound more human and natural.

Next, find a hi-hat sound that you like and again, click the steps where you want the hi-hat to be. Generally, every other note on the step sequencer is a good place to start. Now, do the same thing that you did with the kick sound and send the channel to the piano roll and adjust the velocity. This is even more important on the hi-hat than it is with the kick.

Now for the snare drum(s). I usually like to layer a few together to get the sound just right. I usually like a tight and hard-hitting sound, so I might mix a clap sound with a rim shot and then take 2 different traditional snare hits and turn the level down a little bit on those and then pan one to the right and one to the left at about 35%. For starters, you'll want to put your snare drum on every 4th step in the step sequencer.

Now, you can add more personal touch if you want using the same techniques already mentioned. Feel free to throw in a cowbell, tambourine, cymbal, etc.

Creating the Bass Line

In most hip hop, a low bass sound is used so really all it provides is power and thump and possibly a catchy tune that helps to "glue" the drum sounds together with the rest of the instruments. Choose a low bass sound that will give a good rumble when being bumped, and if there is too much high-end frequency to the sound then you can always cut it out with proper EQ or low-pass filter. I usually like to have the bass frequency set at 50 to 75hz and have the kick set at about 85 to 90 hz. You can also do this in reverse (have the kick lower frequency than the bass). The most important thing is that they don't both occupy the SAME frequency space. This is where most amateur beat makers struggle. It can take a lot of practice to mix the drum kick and the bass line together so that they don't sound weird or cause distortion when they're on top of each other. This will probably be the last thing that you master when learning to make beats because it can take precise EQ and compression to make it sound crisp and professional.

When writing the bass melody, start out simple. Choose a note scale that you want to use and stay within that scale. If you don't know music theory, start out by researching scales and pick one at random. Next, put a blank sound (use a sampler channel, or just turn the volume all the way down on the sound) in your step sequencer in fruity loops. Right click it and open the piano roll. Fill in all the notes in that scale, in every octave, and drag the edge of them so that they show up for the whole duration of the full pattern. Now, open the piano roll for your bass and click the little piano icon in the top left corner of the window. Select view > Ghost Channels. Now every note in the scale will be highlighted gray and you know to stay in these notes while writing your melody. This is a tip you really don't want to ignore because it can help you a lot!

Writing the Main Melody

First, choose your instrument. Let's pick something simple like a piano. Write a melody that goes along with the bass line. Sometimes you can copy your same bass line but then add more notes in between (remember I said to keep your bass line simple). If you have researched some music theory, you should use some chords here and there and use some type of chord progression. Remember to stay in the scale and always view Ghost Channels to make sure you're in the scale in you're unsure. If you want to stay simple you can just have the piano playing for the melody, but feel free to select a couple other complimentary instruments and add some accents here and there. Sometimes I like to use something like a violin just to emphasize certain notes or phrases in the melody.

Writing the Hook

The hook is where you can really go wild because it is the most climactic part of the song. You still want to stay in the correct scale of course, but you can add lots of strings and other instruments. You should either elaborate on the normal verse melody and make it more complex or you should write a totally new melody in the same scale. Remember to try to picture it with vocals on top of it and try to add things that will compliment a finished product / song.

So you want to learn how to rap better? As an MC with ten plus years of experience, I decided share my experiences and insights on how to rap, improve your freestyles and win more battles. You need to practice the fundamentals to become a better rapper. Here it is...

Improve breath control. In order to rap, you need more air. To do this, practice spitting lyrics or freestyles while exercising. Outkast used to jog around their neighborhood while they practised their lines. This helped them rap longer without having to breath.

Can you learn how to rap without rhymes? Create rhyme schemes. So you've got air, now you need words and rhymes. Pick five words you like that are two or three syllables. Now, pull out a rhyming dictionary and write down five rhymes for each word, for a total of 30 words (five words plus five rhymes each). Commit these words to memory and incorporate them into your freestyles and written raps.

Strengthen your vocals. Before you attempt to record a song or freestyle, take time to warm up your vocal chords. I've put together a 14 step vocal workout, but that's a little more detailed. For now, just focus on humming, and move the vibration from your belly to the top of your head. This warm up will make your voice sound richer, more honest and full.

Improve your flow. To learn how to rap is easy, though improving your flow takes time.  To improve it, practice rapping fast, then slow. By changing the tempo you are improving your overall flow. This also helps broaden the number of beats you can comfortably spit on. You don't have to be Snoop Dogg or Twista, but practice both ends of the spectrum for maximum results. Next, try rapping in different accents like French, Australian or Middle Eastern... any of these forces you to really think about your voice and what you're trying to convey.

Hold the mic properly. Think of a microphone like an ice cream cone: hold it by the cone, not the ice cream! Rookie rappers muffle their lyrics by grabbing the top of the mic; don't let this happen to you!

Practice rap battle kung fu. To win more rap battles, you have to take away your opponents ammunition while building up your own. Create a list of generic battle punchlines (e.g. fat jokes) and disses that you can use during a battle. These can be your filler material if you draw a blank.

However, specifics are usually better. Pick things out about your opponent that aren't so obvious. For example, I battled a guy with an Oakland A's hat on, and rather than diss the A's (which wouldn't be a good idea in Oakland) I called him a whole list of names that start with the letter "A" like "arrogant,  atrocious, etc.

If you want to learn how to rap better and win more rap battles, you must realize that winning a crowd is more important than beating your opponent. If I had trashed the A's I would have lost the battle (even though I beat my opponent). Keep the crowd on your side and you'll win more rap battles.

For anyone who battles, it's important to measure your competition. I will watch every battle during a tournament and try to come up with a few good punchlines for each rapper (you never know when you'll need them).
