Of' course, there is the possibility of creating your own genre, but before jumping head long into the water it is better to test the water with your toe. Once you are more comfortable, you can move on to creating your own genres. So first decide on a genre that you love and are comfortable with. Remember, a work that is well begun in half complete. Then decide on what will make that genre special and alluring. Once this ground work is done, you are ready to roll.

Creating your beats:

There are three crucial steps that need to be followed for creating a beat in any genre. They include

· Creating a baseline · Creating the audio loops · Laying out the midi drum patterns.

Creating the baseline is the integral step in any beat creation process, because this lays the foundation. This is the skeleton upon which the other aspects of your music will revolve about. So make sure that the baseline is built to your satisfaction. Moreover this baseline is the sequence that will be played more often in a repeating loop and you will want to make sure that something that is played repeatedly is pleasing and alluring to the ears.

Audio loops form a primary component in genres like rap and hip hop. To create the audio loops, you can use whatever instrument your creativity demands. Besides you can also add a lot of special effects to transform the mood and the tone of the music. You can compress, stretch and create a plethora of other such effects with Dub Turbo and improve the nuances of your music composition. Once you have created your first audio loop, you can add many other audio loops as you wish. After the first audio loop is done, creating the other audio loops will not be as time-consuming as the first one.

Then we have the midi drum patterns. You can use as many and as varied midi drum patterns as you wish, but make sure that you don't make the final effect a discordant cacophony. They can be set in a pattern of a group of unique notes and can be made to play as a secondary baseline.

Once these three components are created to the best of your ability and creativity, your first beat is all ready to rock!

History Of Hip-Hop

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

Hip-hop music or rap music is an admired and famous style or genre of music in the USA. This well-known music genre is made up of two components, rapping and record scratching. Rapping is also known as MCing and DJing, which comprises of audio mixing. These two main components combined with graffiti and break dancing form the four core elements of hip-hop.

History Of Hip-Hop

Hip-hop was initiated as a cultural movement by inner-city youth, mostly Latinos, Hispanics, and African Americans in New York City, in the early seventies. The word "rap" was derived in the sixties, from a slang word that meant conversation.

Hip-hop has two main historical eras, the old school hip-hop era from 1970-1985 and the golden age hip-hop era from 1985-1993. The golden age of hip-hop began only when it entered the mainstream of music and it consolidated the sounds of the West Coast and the East Coast.

The origin of hip-hop music is from African American and West African music. Contributions of griots like The Last Poets, Jalal Mansur Nurriddin, and Gil Scott-Heron were significant in a big way for the advent of hip-hop in the 1960s. Hip-hop had originally begun in the Bronx. Funk and soul music were played a lot in block parties. In the beginning, the DJs at these parties began separating the percussion breaks from hit songs. They started realizing that these breaks were more entertaining and groovy. This technique had become widespread in Jamaica and had spread considerably in the New York community via the Jamaican immigrants.

Kool DJ Herc and Grandmaster Flash were the pioneers in the hip-hop industry and other DJs had extended the short percussion interludes of funk records and created a more danceable sound. As a result, remixes had become popular with the advent of mixing and scratching techniques. Many styles of hip-hop had developed in the golden age of hip-hop.

At present, hip-hop is enjoyed all around the world. In spite, of all the controversies created by hip-hop artists they are still growing in number. Hip-hop music is sold all over the world in stores and even online.

Top 10 Tips on How To Start Your Hip Hop Production Business

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

Set Goals

Top 10 Tips on How To Start Your Hip Hop Production Business

First and foremost set up some goals....break them down into short-term and long term. Ask your-self some questions, understand your motivation. Why are you in the game? What do you want to accomplish? Where do you see your-self in 1-2-5-10 years? Ask your-self all of these questions and be optimistic but also be realistic.

Business Model

A business model is the foundation of your business. If you believe your beats will separate you from the rest that's fine but you need to develop your strategy to hustle. Are you going to incorporate your business or run a sole proprietorship? Do you want a record deal, or do you want to run your own record label? Keep asking your-self questions because there is always room for improvement

Marketing plan

Develop a marketing plan on how to advertise your beats and your brand. Think out-side of the box here and get creative. Read my article on Marketing Your Instrumentals for some other ideas.

Budget

Set up a budget and stick to it. Factor in expenses such as studio software/equipment, purchasing new samples and loops, buying a website etc. There are many start-up costs, but you should be able to do this without spending hundreds of dollars.

Studio Set Up

This is where you put in all your work. Research the best products out there for you, start small and grow. There is a bunch of information available online. Check out our Making Million Dollar Beats with a Low Budget or Review of MiDi M-Audio for some product ideas.

Structured Schedule

Time is money and hard work pays off...sound familiar? These are two of the oldest sayings...but they are so true. Work hard but work smart, be disciplined and consistent. To be a well rounded producer you will need to schedule time to learn new techniques, search for sound kits and samples and set aside time for marketing your business.

Industry Connections

Make your-self assessable both online and offline... make sure if people want to contact you then they can. Be proactive and contact local record labels and submit your demo.

Build a Team

No one can do it all themselves. At some point you are going to need an expert weather it's a web designer, a rapper for your beats, a singer, or your boy who has a million samples. Build your team because they will help you succeed.

Demo

Obviously you need a demo. Make sure it has not only your best music but also a wide range of your skills. Producers these days can make beats anywhere from hard east coast hits to dirty south sounds to R&B melodies. Make sure you round out your skills.

Make Own Instrumental - Tools Needed For Phat Beats and Instrumentals

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

So I had thousands of dollars worth of gear in my bedroom at my parents house to let me make my own instrumentals when I was 17. My parents thought I was freakin' nuts but I was a dreamer. I dreamed that one day I would be able to lay down some beats just like Dre did and all the neighbor chicks would be going wild. My plan was to make own instrumental while my friend rapped over it.

Make Own Instrumental - Tools Needed For Phat Beats and Instrumentals

The problem was, all this gear drove me insane. None of it ever seemed to want to work together right, for the following reasons:

  1. The synths never seemed to be in time with the sampler's sequencer...
  2. The cables on the synth would crackle and any recording I tried to get sounded terrible.
  3. All of my effects had to have the knob configurations written down, so when I wanted to work on the track again, I'd have a way to recall the settings on all this hardware to get a consistent sound(although I never really could, I tried in vain..lol)
  4. I could only record one of each piece of hardware at a time...sounds obvious but once you get spoiled with software, you never want to turn back.
My goal was to make own instrumental. I only started to succeed when software became popular. Although my first computer for making beats was slow by today's standards, the whole thing was almost as powerful as my entire hardware setup, but for only a small fraction of the price!

At first it was extremely tempting to get all these loop Cd's that started to become popular. It seemed like every DJ magazine out was selling the damn things. But after getting just two of these loop Cd's, I realized how easy it would be to abuse this new technology. Everyone and their brother were making own instrumentals by copying the loops on these Cd's and rapping over them...and calling it their own creation. I wanted nothing to do with this. I wanted to create my own beats, something that I could be proud of.

Make Your Own Beats For Cheap!

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

Are you an artist looking to make your own beats? Or are you someone that has always dreamed of becoming a producer? Either way, today is now the best opportunity to make it happen. You can now make your own beats without having hundreds and thousands worth of equipment. You can now make quality beats like Dr. Dre and Timbaland for less than bucks!

Make Your Own Beats For Cheap!

The reason why you make your own beats for so cheap now is because of the invention of online beat programs. This is a system where you download online and onto your computer and make beats. When I first discovered it, I became so happy because I was always discouraged when I would go into the studio and the producer has a lot of studio equipment. I just thought you needed everything in order to make tracks. Now I'm making top notch tracks without spending thousands of dollars.

One thing when researching online programs is to look at how the system works. It doesn't need to be complex. The system I use is very simplified and yet creates some of the best sounding tracks I have heard. It included a video tutorial which was very helpful because I'm not the type that likes to read instruction manuals. I would rather watch someone do it. My program software also offered me a full refund if I was not satisfied with the program, so I didn't have nothing anything to lose. When you make your own beats, you have full control over your music and you control the price you want to sell them for. This reason alone should motivate you to learn to make your own beats today.

Software to Make Beats - How to Find the Right One

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

For a beginner in music production, finding the right software to make beats can be a tough decision. Many of those new to music production (especially in hip hop and rap) aren't really sure of what they are supposed to even be looking for. And because of this, many people will end up buying programs or other hardware and equipment that they don't know how to use, resulting in nothing more than wasted money and more importantly, wasted time.

Software to Make Beats - How to Find the Right One

You need to know what you need in a software to make beats. You don't need anything fancy when you're just starting out. Your most important goal right now is to be able to make a solid, professional sounding beat. Having the latest equipment without the knowledge to use it doesn't help you crank out beats.

With that said, your goal in finding a solid beat making program is to find one that meets the following criteria - it's easy to use, it's packed with sounds specific to your genre (such as hip hop and rap, for example) and that it's inexpensive. While you might want to head to the music store nearest you and pick up the highest end equipment, you need to start small. You want to start making professional sounding beats today, not in 6 months.

There are a few inexpensive beat making programs out there. In fact, some you can even purchase and download right away. They also offer instructional videos and are easy to use right out of the box, giving you total freedom and the ability to start knocking out beats from the get go!

Remember - if you're a beginner in music production, it may take just a little bit of time before you start getting the hang of making a beat, but once you do, you'll be unstoppable. It's not how much your equipment costs - it's whether or not you know how to get the most out of it!

Four Seduction Tips To Your Parrot's Heart

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

As Forest Gump might say "a best friend is as a best friend does."

Four Seduction Tips To Your Parrot's Heart

We're all busy these days and if your life is anything like mine it can be a tough life to live. So, I don't know about you but maybe it's time for a break. Take a little bit of time to hang with your feathered friend(s) and give them some busy time.

You might have many birds, so don't think you have to do this with every bird the same day. However, you should get into the habit of doing a short version of this regularly. Your feathered buddy will love you for it. I know mine does.

Your parrot may not have the social manners other birds have, but you can get him to be that way. You probably could come over too my son's place and pick up to snuggle his African Gray Parrot (Nala) without fear of losing a finger or a nose. But no matter what degree of 'snuggle-ness' your parrot prefers, you can fine-tune each step to your parrot's level of comfort.

Offer your parrot some quality one-on-one time.

Like anyone else, when you focus your attention on them they feel important. Your bird will adopt your mood and connect with you and then you can just hang out together. Let your bird help you pick up around the house. Nala likes to help me pickup around the living room while watching MTV. She actually complains if I turn it off.

When we're done she walks back and forth across my lap while I lay on the easy chair. She'll perch herself on my knee and bob her head up and down to the beat of rap videos. The point is to just hang out. Stay busy by being un-busy. Just be together.

Offer your parrot a favorite meal.

There's something that creates a connection between two lives that share food. It's a calmness that feeds hope. It can end an argument or begin a friendship. The point is it breeds trust and feels right to your bird. So, fix up some fruit or vegetables, or any other favorite dish your bird enjoys. Share it from the same plate, your bird will feel the love and become closer to you for it. Just don't share germs.

Enjoy an Interactive Game.

Have you ever played fetch or tight-rope with a dog? It can be a lot of fun and good exercise for your pet. Hand toys like barbells, a piece of rope, a Popsicle stick, a towel, even a wadded up piece of paper can be a really fun interactive bird toy.

An imagination can conjure up hundreds of safe and fun things to play with. My son's African Gray Parrot loves to play tight-rope with a shoe string. When games over and I win (I never let her win), she loves to tear it to pieces. It doesn't have to be expensive; it just has to be fun!

It's an African Gray's life, why not remodel it?

Ever been bored with your living space? Rearrange the furniture maybe? Maybe when it's real bad you remodel the whole place? Well, your bird gets bored too with his living space. Remodel it a little or a lot. Move the toys around or replace one or four with something knew. You must have had a couch you've wanted to get rid of or at least a piece of furniture that you hated but your spouse liked. Sometimes a bird feels the same. So it's time too give your parrot something new to do when hanging out inside the cage! Every so often, pull their current toys out and put some new ones in. Rotating and recycling toys prevents a monotonous life, and gives your parrot a regular change of scenery.

Ever showered with a platonic girl friend?

I have. It starts out as an odd feeling, something kinda not right (after all we're just friends); once the feeling wears off it becomes something of a social courtesy to each other, something necessary. More of a "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" type of thing. A kindred relationship forms.

Showering with your parrot is more of the same. It's strange for them at first as well. Getting past that though brings a new reliance. Depending on your parrot's preference, let them splash around in the tub. Mist your parrot with a spray bottle from above as if it's a light rain. Then gradually take them into the shower, make sure they have their own shower perch. Put together a real pamper session. Whatever they fancy, make it fun!

Vivaldi's Winter

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

Songwriting is a balancing act between music and lyrics. Recently I was teaching one of my classes about Vivaldi's Winter from the Four Seasons. I was trying to articulate that the composer was able to paint a picture of Winter using only music. I then asked my students to think about why the song truly does paint a picture of winter.

Vivaldi's Winter

We talked about dissonance in the melody first. "Why would a song about Winter have intervals that create dissonance?" I said that it was because the cold of winter creates dissonance in us, as we try to brave the cold, bundle up and try to move from one warm area to the next. What about the steady four - four rhythms followed by violin flurries that last an unpredictable number of measures (actually most of them last 3 measures).

We decided that the unmeasured bursts would be the wind. The steady beats could be the sound of one of us trudging through the snow with each laborious footstep with violin flurries blowing the cold air down our throats making it hard to breathe. My favorite thought was the shivering violins in the song's most stable section. Really the most memorable part of the song. In songwriting that would be called prosody---musical sections that represent what is happening in the lyrics.

In my original band Freerider, we used a lot of prosody. We have a song called Ageless Veins, which is all about the Nashua River and some of its history. The introduction uses tapped harmonics on the guitar making a very dripping watery sound. Further in the song, the guitar solo has a whammy bar dive with delay and chorus on it which sounds like a dive to the bottom of a River. From there, the solo seems to flow very dramatically rising to climax. Like Vivaldi's Winter, "Ageless Veins" musically resembles the theme that drives the lyrics.

Turntablism and the Rise of Hip Hop

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

With the rise in popularity and hence, commercialism of the hip-hop subculture nowadays, the urban lifestyles various facets have naturally been pushed into the mainstream.

Turntablism and the Rise of Hip Hop

Not without the help of MTV and its various offshoots, a lifestyle that just a few years ago was still underground is now common fodder for soft-drink commercials, billboard ads and even NBA games. It's not uncommon nowadays to ask a 50 year old Caucasian farmer from the Midwest who The Fresh Prince is and get a correct answer (uh, that would be Will Smith in case you're wondering).

It's only natural then that the street arts that make-up the backbone of hip-hop has also gained international pop attention. Graffiti writing, break-dancing, rapping and beat-boxing (making rap beats with one's mouth) used to be confined to the urban ghettos of the main cities of America like New York and Los Angeles. Now spray-painted (aerosol) art can be seen on the walls of Berlin, national break-dancing competitions in Seoul are televised globally, and rappers are a dime a dozen in the cities of the Philippines. One can truly say hip-hop has gone pop when Iraqi kids scramble to get their hands on posters of 50cent. The saying "music knows no boundaries" becomes a colossal understatement indeed in light of this.

'Deejaying' or the more accurate term- turntablism, is one of the last nuances of hip-hop to come out of the urban jungles of America. According to battlesounds.com, a website created for hip-hop deejays by hip-hop deejays, a turntablist can be defined as "one who has the ability to improvise on a phonograph turntable." DJ Babu of the world-famous Beat Junkies (an award-winning turntablist crew) defines a turntablist as "one who uses the turntable in the spirit of a musical instrument". Still, a more detailed definition- "a musician: a hip-hop disc jockey who in a live/spontaneous situation can manipulate or restructure an existing phonograph recording (in combination with an audio mixer) to produce or express a new composition that is unrecognizable from its original ingredients."

The word hip-hop was said to have been coined from the way early turntablists 'hopped' from one turntable to another in a 'hip' fashion during live shows with rappers. Indeed, the DJ has come a long way from being a rapper's sidekick during hip-hop's infancy. Now they can be seen playing in rock bands like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Incubus- packing stadiums throughout the globe with their fusion of rock and hip-hop music.

Some people say the rise turntablism and hip-hop as a whole is just a fad and that it will die down soon. I'm not so sure about this- everything that comes with this magnificent African-American sub-culture has surely brought more color to the urban lifestyle of today's youth. There are now lots more ways to express oneself in terms of fashion, music and arts. One thing I can say for sure though- The more the merrier!

Mobb Deep Mixtapes And How They Affected Their Rise To Stardom

Prodigy and Havoc started rhyming together while both attended the Art and Design High School of New York City. Though originally calling themselves the Poetical Prophets, their name later changed to Mobb Deep so that they could reflect their street reputation. Though their first record was a disappointment, it did gain some recognition for the hip hop songs titled "Hit It From the Back" and "Me and My Crew."

Credited for the resurgence of East Coast rap in the early 1990's, they are one of the most successful duos in rap history, having sold over 4 million records. Though most of their albums are critically acclaimed, their album titled The Infamous, is considered a classic. Though in their early years, they relied heavily on releasing new and fresh Mobb Deep mixtapes to spread their name and hip hop beats.

Some of the titles include, Queensbridge Meets, Unreleased Tape, Infamous Mobb, Mobb Misses 4, and Something Like a Horror Flick. As with most artists struggling to make it in the business, all of the Mobb Deep mixtapes were available for free at many of the rap shows around New York City. All of their music went back to portraying the struggles of living in public housing in New York City, which is really all they knew at the time.

Today, they have released 8 studio albums, and hundreds of different Mobb Deep mixtapes, which help to keep them fresh in the minds of their fans. Their new mixtapes are often highly anticipated,as their unique blend of hip hop beats never gets old. Only time will tell how they will be remembered among the great hip hop artists of all time.

Can You Make Drum Samples Yourself?

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

Any person with a personal computer can develop and make their own drum samples for various purposes. It is still not such an easy process and the learning curve can be quite steep, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to make your own unique, signature drum samples with ease and precision like a professional.

Can You Make Drum Samples Yourself?

Common tools for the task include audio editors and wave sound compatible sequencers and plugins. There are free audio editors like Audacity that you can download at a moment's notice. These types of programs are usually a snap to install, so if you haven't used one, don't worry; you'll get it installed within seconds in most cases, even if you're not all that comfortable with computers. Editing in a program like this, although very powerful and accurate, is not as hard as many make it out to be. There are usually some simple operations that need to be performed to trim and crop, nothing more!

You can also develop your drum samples in programs like Propellerheads' Reason and FL Studio. Simply make the changes you want in the programs using the in-built editors, effects units and reverb before exporting just the channel for that one sound and its associated effects. Then crop it up if you set the length to be the whole song, otherwise export just a single bar or beat if the sound occupies that amount.

Sampling is another popular method that has helped DJs, music producers and beat makers find quality drum samples for the last 20 years and even earlier than that. Extracting these sounds from records from the 60s, 70s, 50s and earlier also is good for locating uncompressed drum samples, as these decades did not have the loudness war that is evident in every chart-entering song of the modern.

Synthesizing drum samples is another option for the budding music sample connoisseur. The machines with this capability also date back many decades, including old Roland and Korg drum groove boxes with synthesizer functionality. Usually, a number of parameters are there to be modified by the user, and the traditional sound offered by that particular box usually remains with any changes, generating a nice mix between the structure of that sound and the special characteristics assigned to it.

When it comes to then sculpting your own sounds, you can use many processing techniques. Equalization and compression are two common choices for professional and amateurs alike. One tip sometimes given by those with experience is to limit the effects to sculpting and not loudness. Changing the tone of a sound is different from changing its level indiscriminately.

Making Rap Beats That Sound Fresh

,
MAKE RAP BEATS :

When I first started out making my recordings, it was both a fun, but it was also frustrating making my own hip hop beats. With lots of practice and time, I came up with good tips and techniques that will make your experience making rap beats a whole lot easier.

Making Rap Beats That Sound Fresh

First of all, know your style. Pick your genre. Know what kind of sound you want to make and it'll save you time and energy. You can do rap, funk, soul, blues...just let yourself go and do what feels right to you.

Pick an artist your trying to mimic or just listen to anything you dig the beat on. You really have to tune in to the underlying beat. The next step is to get some good software.

There's a really good program that's only about 30 bucks that you can get at http://www.makeabeatsoftware.com

The next step is to format your beat. Listen to one of your favorite beats and pay attention to the timing and make sure to catch when the instruments come in. Some beats are simple, some are complex. The easiest is to use a 2-bar beat, then up from there. Eventually you'll make it to an 8-bar beat.

Drums are critical if your making a strong rap beat. If you're serious at making music, don't use pre-recorded drum beat kits. They are super weak in the finished product. If the drum beat in the hip hop track isn't strong, your whole beat will come down.

Pay attention to your rap beats and don't feel bad about trying to mimic some of the big name rap artists. These are the guys who know what they're doing.
